Founded by Tim and Sue Fawcett in 1990, Optimum Knitwear is a New Zealand owned company based in west Auckland. Right from the start, Optimum’s focus has been the production of classically styled, fine gauge knitwear using high quality natural fibres. Not only do we create our own designs, we knit and construct them on the premises. This allows maximum quality control and the flexibility to respond quickly to market demands.

Today we employ more than 60 people and our garments are available from around 150 stockists throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Scottish-Italian methodology

For inspiration and manufacturing standards, we have always looked to Scotland and Italy. These countries have long been recognised as world leaders in the production of fine gauge knitwear. Optimum was one of the first New Zealand knitwear manufacturers to create garments using new generation computerised fully fashioned machines from Shima Seiki in Japan.

Knitting to order

In addition to the garments we design and make for our brands, we are able to manufacture high quality knitted garments for the business and education sectors.

Looking to the future

In 1990, our decision to equip the Optimum factory with world-leading, computerised Shima Seiki knitting machines was a good one. Our ability to create fully-fashioned knitwear gave us a market advantage, which is why we maintain a close eye on advances in knitting technology. The future lies with machines that can be programmed to create a garment that is knitted as a single piece, three-dimensionally, with no finishing or seam sewing required. Optimum is currently evaluating a move to this type of technology.
